Apply electrical safety standards – Understand the importance of proper grounding and overload protection in home electrical systems, and recognize basic code requirements (per ARSO, SANS, IEC, etc.) without getting lost in legal jargon.
Identify wiring defects and hazards – Spot faulty wiring conditions, overloaded circuits, unsafe electrical panels, aluminum wiring issues, and dangerous DIY modifications commonly found in homes.
Test and evaluate electrical components – Safely inspect and test breakers, meters, outlets, and light fixtures using appropriate tools (multimeters, receptacle testers, etc.), and assess if an electrical system’s capacity is adequate for a home’s needs.
Ensure proper grounding and surge protection – Verify that a home’s grounding system is intact (and detect ground faults), understand lightning risks in African climates, and recommend surge protection measures to safeguard appliances in regions with unstable power and frequent thunderstorms.
Overview: This 10-hour Pan-African module trains home inspectors to evaluate residential electrical systems safely and thoroughly across diverse African settings. It covers grounding, overload protection, circuit safety, and surge protection, with emphasis on regional challenges like lightning, grid instability, and unsafe modifications. Inspectors will learn to test panels, outlets, and wiring using practical tools, interpret code-aligned standards (IEC, ARSO, NBC, SANS), and document hazards clearly. Ethical conduct, personal safety, and client education are core themes. By module’s end, inspectors will confidently identify electrical risks, recommend solutions, and uphold high inspection standards that protect lives and property throughout Africa.
