Learning Objectives:
By the end of this Module, students should be able to:
- Identify and describe key regional construction methods in North Africa, including adobe (mud-brick) buildings, flat and terraced roofs, and masonry structures common in arid and seismic-prone environments.
- Evaluate the condition and risks associated with traditional mud-brick (adobe) construction, including erosion, moisture intrusion, and structural instability, while applying appropriate inspection and maintenance recommendations tailored to desert climates.
- Inspect flat and terraced roofs for drainage adequacy, waterproofing failures, structural damage, and thermal cracking, and recommend maintenance or retrofitting strategies suitable for low-rainfall but high UV exposure areas.
- Assess the earthquake vulnerability of residential buildings by identifying structural reinforcements (or lack thereof), foundation anchorage, soft-story configurations, and unbraced elements, particularly in older unreinforced masonry and adobe homes.
- Demonstrate knowledge of regional climate influences (desert dryness, seasonal rains, seismic hazards) and how these affect the durability, performance, and safety of buildings in North Africa.
- Conduct culturally aware and technically sound inspections, drawing from regional construction styles, historical methods, and modern retrofitting practices, while educating clients on preservation and safety improvements for both heritage and modern buildings.
- Apply inspection best practices specific to North African architecture, including visual and tactile assessments, moisture diagnostics, structural crack interpretation, and documentation of defects with region-appropriate recommendations.
Overview: This module focuses on construction and inspection practices suited to North Africa’s dry desert and Mediterranean climates. Traditional materials like mud-brick (adobe) are common, flat roofs and terraces are prevalent, and parts of this region face seismic risks. Students will learn how to inspect adobe structures, assess flat roof integrity, and evaluate earthquake-resistant features in North African buildings.
