Learning Objectives:
By the end of this Module, students should be able to:
- Identify and describe the common building materials and construction techniques used in West African coastal and tropical regions, particularly laterite blocks and sandcrete blocks, and evaluate their suitability for the region’s hot, humid, and rain-intense environment.
- Recognize typical structural and moisture-related defects in laterite and sandcrete block walls, including erosion, cracking, plaster delamination, and foundation vulnerabilities, and apply inspection techniques to detect these issues through visual, tactile, and sound-based assessments.
- Assess the role of moisture, high humidity, and poor ventilation in promoting mold growth and material deterioration in West African homes, and conduct indoor air quality evaluations by identifying key risk zones (e.g., bathrooms, attics, closets) and ventilation performance.
- Recommend appropriate maintenance, design modifications, and remediation strategies to prevent or resolve mold and humidity issues, including improvements in passive and active ventilation, sealing practices, and the use of mold-resistant materials.
- Evaluate site conditions and drainage systems in flood-prone environments, identifying red flags such as poor grading, clogged or absent gutters, soakaway overflow, foundation exposure, and signs of previous flooding or erosion.
- Advise clients on effective flood mitigation measures tailored to West African climates and housing types, including site regrading, gutter installation, French drains, raised construction techniques, protective finishes, and emergency barriers.
- Integrate regional knowledge and culturally appropriate recommendations into inspection reports and client interactions, promoting practical solutions that align with local materials, construction styles, and environmental realities.
Overview: This module addresses the warm, humid climates of West Africa’s coastal and tropical zones. Construction here often uses different materials such as laterite blocks and sandcrete, and buildings face challenges from high humidity, mold, and seasonal flooding. The three lessons in this track train students to inspect local construction materials, manage moisture and biological growth issues, and evaluate homes in flood-prone environments for adequate drainage and resilience.
